- Identify all the changes involved in the principle, and write a generality that includes the changes and the relationship among the changes. References are needed.
Grandmaster Kim Soo, stated that “understanding the basic principle of a task gives the learner common sense” (Cox, 2005). Therefore applying principles in performing a task, gives the learner a purpose. Students understand the process involved and the outcome of a task being performed. They are aware of “the why” and “the how” of performing a task. Principle surpasses or go beyond facts (Miller, 2009). Principles offer students the opportunity to acquire skills and abilities needed to perform a specific task than mere facts and knowledge.
To play Natalie’s Scratch Math Game, students would need to apply both Process and Casual principles.
Applying process principles, students need to understand the formula for finding the area of a rectangle (Length x Width). Student understand that, the only situation that will let the cat move forward is when they get the answer correct. Student also understand the steps/rules involved in playing the math game as; click green flag, plug numbers into the box by applying the formula of finding the area of a rectangle.
As students apply process principles to play the math game, Casual principles are also applied to achieve a goal. Students make sure that their answers are correct to make the cat move forward to the finish line to win the game (cause and effect). In turn applying the solution kind of casual principle.

2. Share the proposed media selection for modifying the instruction as appropriate to each change for your Case Study. Clearly define the forms of behaviors applied to the changes.
For example, a video game is proposed to replace the PowerPoint presentation to let the students practice on Math multiplication. State the forms of behaviors applied to this change.
The proposed media selection for modifying this instruction or Natalie’s Scratch Math Game would be, introducing students to websites such as; AdaptedMind, http://www.mathforum.com/, http://www.AAAmath.com/, http://www.coolmath.com/, http://www.figurethis.org/, http://www.mathcats.com/,http://www.easymaths.org/ to further practice what they have learned (finding the area of a rectangle) other than, the traditional work sheets used in the classroom.
Students have learned the principles underlying the formula for finding the area of a rectangle. They have also acquired the knowledge of playing video games by following the instructions or steps needed to play Natalie’s Scratch Math Game. In addition they understand that they have to get the correct answer to see results. (casual principle)
Very nice post. I'll have to check out the math websites you linked they could be useful. As a social studies teacher I wish there was a website similar to adapted minds for history.
ReplyDeleteAdelina, you have really brought home the difference between process and casual and given a lot of thought around principle learning in general. Your R.K. Miller reference is a gold mine for understanding. Thank you as I used that reference as a kickstart to our summary this week.
ReplyDeleteAdelina, I like the way you say principle goes beyond the facts. It is a breakdown of materials. Adapted Minds is a great site.
